About Naval Point Club Lyttelton

Welcome to Naval Point Club, Canterbury's premier boating and open water sports club!

Naval Point Club

Established in 2001, the Naval Point Club is the result of uniting the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club and the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club. We have over 1000 members and we are based at Magazine Bay, Lyttelton.

Naval Point Club has excellent facilities, is an all-tide venue and offers many services to its members. A comprehensive member's handbook is published yearly listing the full race calendar, social and cruising events, membership, fleet registers, contact details and Club rules. The Club's active fleets include vessels from the small Optimist dinghies to large keel boats, with substantial numbers of trailer yachts, catamarans and dinghies. As well as sailing vessels, club membership includes powerboats, jet skis and launches, waka ama, kayaks, stand up paddle boarders and swimmers.

The summer season is from late September through to mid April with activity on Saturdays, with a very popular twilight racing series during the week. A winter series of sailing and paddling races is also held through May and June on Sunday afternoons.

Harbour events are supported by the Club's fleet of rescue boats and team of volunteers.

Regular coaching and training is available for youngsters in Optimists, Windsurfers, waka and other junior classes with more advanced coaching for youth members. We host many national and local regattas throughout the season and have an excellent race management team, well equipped with race technology and specialist knowledge.

The Club has storage and repair facilities available to members, with a large grassed rigging area, haul-out facilities for vessels up to 45', a secure boat maintenance area, wash down facilities, cradles, launching trolleys and dinghy storage under cover.

We have regular social activities for members including raft ups, picnics, cruises and guest speakers. Racing rules and safety evenings are also popular with members, and Coastguard Boating Education is based from Naval Point, offering a wide variety of courses.

There is an extensive library housed in the Clubrooms with fiction and non fiction titles available all about things to do with the sea. There are many quality books dealing with our own cruising grounds, technical matters, seamanship, racing, as well as many local and international sea classics. The Club archive contains historic photographs and records dating back to the turn of the century.

We have an office with the Club Manager in attendance during the week and a comfortable wardroom for after race gatherings. Hot food is available during bar opening hours.

Our wardroom is available for hire for private functions, and are a popular venue for weddings and family celebrations.

Membership is open to all interested people.
