Fleets and Specialist Groups

Naval Point Fleets and Specialist Groups. As the club has grown and incorporated the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club and the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club it has embraced and developed a wide range of activities, each of which is managed as a Fleet or Specialist Group. The Club also hosts Dragon boat events and training sessions from time to time.

Page Te Waka Pounamu
Te Waka Pounamu is the waka ama group of Naval Point Club and is a very active group. Members are to be seen on the coldest winter's day taking to the water for a paddle round the harbour.
Folder Dinghies
The dinghy fleet is a very active and innovative group within the club and members include several international sailors. Coaching is offered for sailors who wish to improve their racing and boat handling skills and the fleet has a friendly network of people who can offer advice on those thorny questions like jib tension, mast rake, rudder rake and rigging for different weather conditions.
Page Canterbury Trailer Yacht Squadron
The CTYS operates as a fleet within the Naval Point Club and has its own social events and trophies in addition to participating in main Club events.
Page Keelboat Racing Fleet
Racing forms a large part of the Club's activities and is an ideal way to extend any skipper's knowledge of their vessel and how to handle it in a variety of conditions.
Page Power Boats
The Club has a venerable fleet of motor boats owned by members. They play an active role in the racing and cruising programmes, are a social haven and a welcome base for some offshore events. We also have a growing fleet of smaller trailer borne power boats who appreciate the access to the club's launching facilities.
Page Classic Yachts
Lyttelton Harbour hosts some of the loveliest and oldest vessels in New Zealand.
Page Model Yachts
Several Club members have built or own and race sleek model yachts reminiscent of the new Americas Cup boats.
Folder Cruising
Anyone can go cruising and the Cruising fleet welcomes participation from all vessels and skippers with cruising capability: dinghies, sea kayaks, motor boats, trailer yachts, Waka Ama and keelers. Each year the Cruising Fleet operates four major events and an active on-shore programme, aiming to encourage people to explore their local and wider seaboard safely, responsibly and enjoyably. Cruising yachts also take part in stress free racing as the Non Spinnaker Division (see programme). Banks Peninsula has 76 named bays and provides a rich cruising ground with a wealth of nautical history for prudent skippers. The Club owns and manages a number of moorings in Lyttelton Harbour and adjacent bays for use of members. Please note that a 20 tonne displacement limit applies to all Club moorings. Further afield cruises to the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay, Stewart Island and Fiordland open up a wider range of possibilities while several yachts cruise the Pacific islands each year, then come back to retell their stories at a social evening. All cruising vessels are encouraged to join the VHF Association which provides a voluntary radio service all round the coast of New Zealand, together with regular 'skeds' for cruising vessels to log in by VHF or SSB. Visiting vessels can seek temporary berths in Lyttelton, Purau or Diamond Harbour . Contact the Club office for more information (03 328 7029)
