Coaching & Training
The Club has an active coaching programme, especially in dinghy classes, for more advanced racing sailors wishing to develop racing and boat handling skills. It also offers coaching for coaches and training for rescue boat operators. Naval Point Club owns a fleet of Optimist dinghies and has an active Learn to Sail Program for younger sailors which operates on Saturday mornings during the Sailing Season. For the offshore sailor the Club has a programme of events relating to safety awareness, covering practical training in the use of Flares, Lifeboat practice, Provisioning and an understanding of the requirements for Cat 1 to Cat 5 certification, all in conjunction with local safety specialists. Contact the Club office for further information. The Club supports the excellent safety and formal coastal and offshore courses offered by Canterbury Coastguard and Sumner Lifeboat by recommending that members gain appropriate offshore qualifications and knowledge. From time to time the Club is able to arrange sponsored training at greatly reduced cost for members. A good way to learn more is to crew on someone else's boat. The Club runs a Crew List for people wanting experience on another boat. Check out the list on line, or contact viki.moore@xtra.co.nz.
