Lifejacket Testing Event

Date: Saturday December 2nd

Time: 11am-4pm

Where: Naval Point Club Lyttelton

As a part of our club's promotion of safety on the water the Naval Point Club will provide an opportunity to check the effectiveness of your Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs).

Sailors in small boats regularly wear their PFDs and have a good idea of the condition. The aids do, however, deteriorate in condition and effectiveness over time as well as both children and adults growing to exceeded the safe weight limit for that PFD.

Sailors in larger boats often store their PFDs on their boats and may have a little idea of their condition until required in an emergency, its common so see expired or corroded gas canister preventing your inflatable life jacket from inflating when needed.

We will be providing dunk testing for Buoyancy Aids and visual checks for inflatables.

All vessels are required by Maritime law to have suitable PFDs for all people on board. For boats under 6 meters the PFDs must be worn. Yachting New Zealand Safety Regulations are a good guide to recommended and required safety equipment.

The Pint to Pint is back!

Yes you read the right, the pint to pint is back on  Sunday December 17th so save the date.

We are looking at a midday start and each trailer yacht & keelboat will need to have a dinghy or some vessel under tow to get your designated beverage consumer or consumers ashore or to your check points  (Yes there maybe bonus points up for grabs to those who have a youth member participating). If you do not have a dinghy, you are more than welcome to borrow one of our plastic Opti however oars are very limited.

Everyone is welcome so get the family onboard for a day full of fun and memories and come join us back at the club afterwards for a bite to eat and our Christmas celebrations.

Further details to come

Parking

As we head into 2 very busy weekends of regattas with our reduced carpark space we please ask ALL of our members to be mindful of this.

We are asking those who arrive with single vehicles early on a Saturday or Sunday morning to please park in 2 even and orderly rows on the harbor and back side of the carpark Closest to the containers and waka to allow those members who are arriving shortly after with boats on trailers space to safely park closest to the ramp and fencing for the construction area. This allows trailers to be maneuvered without risk of hitting another vehicle.

Canterbury Yachting Association Centenary Celebration

CYA has supported the promotion, growth and development of our sport on a regional basis and helped many younger sailors compete both nationally and internationally through coaching and travel grants.

At this event we had an opportunity for past and current members of the CYA along with other club officers to meet and celebrated the achievements of Canterbury Yachting over the past 100 years.

It was a lovely evening celebrating Canterbury Yachting Association 100 year anniversary! Our lovely Viki Moore, Ross May, and Wayne Keen were all given recognition of their service.

Ramp Rules and Etiquette

As our busy season continues just a quick reminder of the ramp.

There is a yellow line down the center.  The side closest to the club is hand launch only.  The side closer to the jetty is vehicle launch only,  this is not only for our safety but yours.  We understand there can be issues with wind and tides.  At the end of the day we want everyone to go home safe and sound.

if you are found to be going down the ramp without a safety chain from your trailer to your vehicle, you will be stopped, returned to the top of the ramp and asked to fit one before you proceed. No exemptions.

Fundraising?

We would love to host your fundraising event.  We have private events at the club as you all know.  We would love to help you fundraise with a Bacon Butty event at the club on a beautiful Saturday or Sunday with our kitchen.  You could collect the money or we could use one of our machines to help.  We could supply the ingredients or you could bring your own and the profit goes straight to you.  Let me know if you would like to reserve the kitchen for an event!

More Mooring updates:

Our mooring in Diamond Harbour (PUR136Y 43o37.430 S 172o 44.200 E) is ready for use.  There are a couple changes.  The max length has been lowered to 16 metres and combined 20 tons and no more than 3 boats.

Our mooring in Akaroa is good to go for use as well.

Reporting incidents and near misses:

If you have a incident or near miss in the clubhouse, grounds, ramp, or on water please create a report.  This allows the club to learn and adapt.  Here is the link on our website: https://www.sporty.co.nz/navalpoint/about/health-safety
