Learn to Sail and Holiday Camps

Its that time of year where we begin to wrap up all our learning from our term 4 learn to sail and green fleet sailing.

This term we brought fifteen 9-13 year olds through learn to sail and twelve are in the midst of their green fleet journey.

For anyone who is interested in joining for the new year, please email Amanda ASAP as we are just trying to work through some logistics and numbers.

On the 18th to 21st of December we are running our annual school holiday sailing camp, this is for any sailor who has completed a learn to sail course in the recent years. We have our fleet of plastic Opti or Skiffs for those who have sailed them before. Each day we will choose a different destination in the harbour to sail to for lunch before making our way back to NPCL in the afternoon, Fun and Games are top of the list for these days.

The days run from 9am – 3.30pm Monday to Thursday, you can participate in one day or all 4 days. $55 per day.

Please contact Amanda at Sailing@navalpoint.co.nz for more details.

A note from Matt Allen

CTYS Vice-Commodore:

The Canterbury Champs and Elliott 5.9 Southern Circuit One took place at NPCL over the last weekend. Absolute champagne sailing conditions were the order of the weekend, flat water and light southerlies going easterly, I don't think we could have asked for better. Simon Cross as RO put up some fantastically set courses, thanks to him and all the volunteers that came out and put it on for us.

The Elliott 5.9's attracted an exceptional fleet of seven boats racing off their own start, they put up some spectacular sailing that was well worth watching, particularly the starts, which we got a really good look in on from the TY fleet. These were very hotly contested truly fantastic battles to watch, with the appropriate amount of barging an yelling going on - a boat end bias must have given the team on the start boat something to think about on a few of those races - it was getting pretty tight in there. Shane Smith on Boat One took out the win, dropping his only second for the series, though I'm lead to believe he still had to work for it - so don't take those results at face value. Seamus Treadnick on Magpie and Andrew McFarlane Retro put up a close fought battle, with Seamus taking second by one point. Honorable mention to Andrew for a third in his first lot of racing on the new boat.

From the TY fleet, after watching the 5.9's start - the pressure was certainly on to deliver a good show. I'm quietly confident we did that, there were certainly a few instances of boats being squeezed out and again the appropriate shouting split the fleet nicely on to port and starboard tacks fairly well every start. To mix it up this year, I elected not to split the fleet between A and B division, as we didn't have sufficient boats in A fleet to award a trophy and give the win any merit. This gave the B division boats a good crack at getting thier name on what has traditionally been for the bigger boats, it also had the effect of making everyone work hard for their respective positions. Given the collection of boats that we had, it also gave the benefit of being able to break out some class trophies for the 22's, 25's and 780's, which was neat - particularly well done to the 25's for getting out there as it's been a while since we awarded that one - Nick Coultas squeezing that one out of Tony Aitkens hands, despite being a little light on crew on the Sunday, well done to both of you. On Flat Tack we got the better of the AFU boys, though they made us work for it, and despite us taking the bullet on all the races - it's still a game of handicaps, and Tristan Ornsby on Hardcore Pawn proved unbeatable there all weekend, taking the Amiri Trophy for the regatta, as well as the N22 trophy at the same time - well sailed.

Thanks to Oborns Nautical for sponsoring the Regatta for us, they came to the party and gave us a hand with some really awesome prizes, including two Zhik lifejackets valued at $180 a piece, one of which went out as a spot prize. Taurus Engineering also sponsored the 5.9's putting up bunch of Rum, wine, and port as prizes. Everyone in the regatta walked away with something, and thanks to both companies for their support. NPCL put on a build your own burger on the Saturday night, which was fantastic and included in the entry fee thanks for that team!

For next year I've walked away with a few ideas, it was pretty awesome to see 15 boats out on the water going hammer and tongs racing, and I'm sure we can do better next year. There were some great prizes put up by the sponsors and the CTYS supported that financially also, I'm intending to do the same next year - so if you want to be a part of it make sure you enter, we'll see you there.

Thanks all to all who competed and volunteered in the regatta,
