Farewell from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,

As 2025 progresses and my final Annual General Meeting as Board Chair approaches, I want to take a moment to reflect on our incredible journey at Naval Point Club Lyttelton. Serving on the board since 2019 has been a true privilege, and I'm immensely proud of the club's evolution and what we've achieved together. While it hasn't always been plain sailing, and we haven't pleased everyone or agreed on every idea, I've genuinely valued the robust discussions many members have brought to the table.

For me, it's time to shift focus to supporting my children as they prepare for university. On a personal note, I'm also looking forward to competing in the Trans Tasman Solo Yacht Race next year and embarking on more motorbike adventures overseas, starting with India later this year.

The past few years have presented both challenges and remarkable successes. Here are some of the key highlights that stand out:

Hosting SailGP
One of our most thrilling experiences was undoubtedly hosting SailGP. This wasn't just an event; it was a powerful testament to our club's capabilities and our community's spirit. Seeing the world's fastest catamarans race in our backyard and the buzz it created around Lyttelton was truly unforgettable. It showcased Naval Point on an international stage and brought fantastic energy to our waters.

Changes in Management
We've navigated significant changes in management, and I want to acknowledge the dedication of everyone who has stepped up to lead our club, including our current Club Manager, Sabrina. While these transitions were sometimes challenging, they've ultimately strengthened our operational foundation and brought fresh perspectives crucial for our growth. A key aspect of this has been actively listening to our members and adapting how we deliver services and improve our facilities to meet their needs.

Increasing Connection with the Lyttelton Community
A core focus for the current board has been fostering a stronger connection with the Lyttelton community. We believe Naval Point is a vital part of this town's fabric, and we've worked hard to open our doors and engage more with our neighbours through various initiatives and events. This collaborative spirit has enriched both the club and the wider community. Our founding membership with Whakaraupo Recreation is a key community connection we must continue to nurture. The improved relationship with the Christchurch City Council is also worth a special mention.

Modernising Accounts and Systems
Behind the scenes, we've undertaken a significant effort to modernise our accounts and systems. This crucial work, though not always visible, has laid the groundwork for greater efficiency, transparency, and future sustainability. It ensures our club operates on a sound and contemporary footing, making us more robust for years to come.   A special thanks to Mark O'Reilly for his extensive work in this area.

Financial Performance
This hasn't been an easy task, but we continue to monitor and improve the club's financial performance. Through prudent management, strategic planning, and the hard work of our board and volunteers, we've seen incremental improvement. This stronger position allows us to invest back into the club, with a particular focus on preventative maintenance and asset replacement where possible.

Looking ahead, the future of Naval Point Club Lyttelton is bright. We have a wonderfully talented board, a vibrant membership with many dedicated volunteers, and an incredible setting. Thank you for your continued support and passion for our club. It's been an honour to serve as your Chairman.

Ngā mihi nui,
Tim Bloy
Board Chairman,
Naval Point Club Lyttelton

Cholmondeley Chartiy Yacht Race
100 year celebration

It’s that time of year again when we are on the hunt for a number of boats to help us support Cholmondeley Children’s Centre for their annual charity race day.  From cruisers to keelboats right down to trailer yachts if you have a boat and are happy to take some keen crew out on the 17th October please get in touch!

This year is special because we are helping celebrate Cholmondeley's 100 years of support to our communities.

Cholmondeley will have corporate teams from as small as 4 and as large as 9 people so please let us know how many you can comfortably (and maximum) take.

You are welcome and encouraged to have one other experienced crew member on board with you. We will have a skipper's briefing at 12.30 pm. At 1 pm, everyone will make their way to the boats, and at 2 pm, the race starts. Afterwards, there will be a social function and auctions. All are welcome.
