It’s hard to believe, but the new sailing season is just around the corner! I’m especially excited this year as we welcome the largest Level 1 Learn to Sail kids’ group we’ve had in years. It’s fantastic to see so many young sailors getting ready to start their journey on the water, and I can’t wait to watch their progress throughout the season. We also have a number of youth advancing to Green Fleet, Open Fleet and Starlings, and I am looking forward to travelling locally and nationally with many of them.
Over the winter, I’ve been busy rebuilding Spearhead's trusty Yanmar engine and removing 35 years of grease. By the time this is in print, I hope to be finished in the haulout yard, and I’ll be more than ready to swap spanners for sails and see everyone back out on the harbour for Opening Day. My son Louis has also been hard at work sanding and varnishing his new Starling.
This season will be filled with lots of new faces, not just in our youth programmes, but also in our brand-new Adult Learn to Sail course learn more here. It’s exciting to see our club growing across all ages and stages.
Alongside structured training, we’ve got plenty of fun on the calendar:
Day sails to Quail Island
Sleepovers and raft-ups
Club fun days
And plenty more adventures to bring our community together.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Opening Day—whether you’re brand new to sailing, a seasoned racer, or just here to enjoy the camaraderie of our club. Here’s to a safe, fun, and action-packed season ahead.
See you on the water, Reuben Miller Commodore, Naval Point Club Lyttelton
Getting Ready for the New Season 🚤⛵️
The new season is almost here, and things are already buzzing around the club!
Training & Courses
Over the next couple of weekends, 27 of our awesome volunteers will be jumping into Skipper and Race Officer training—a big thank you to everyone getting involved!
We also had six of our Race Officers head along to the National Race Officer Meeting in Pleasant Point last weekend—great to see NPCL so well represented.
Missed the First Aid course? No worries, we’re lining up another one in October. Plus, VHF/MRROC courses will be running monthly throughout the season, so there are plenty of chances to join in.

At 6 pm we will have a briefing on the upcoming season, going over all the documents and systems we have created. We will walk you through online registration, signon and off, and any other questions you may have.
At 7 pm, this fun quiz night will mix sailing-themed trivia with a refresher on the rules of racing-the perfect way to test your skills while enjoying good company. Teams of two to six can enter for just $20 per team, so gather your crew and get ready to compete.
There are some fantastic prizes on offer, including a $100 bar tab to enjoy on the night, Eruption Brewing’s award-winning beers, vouchers for future visits, and exclusive merchandise like caps, trucker hats, and shirts.
We’d love to see everyone come along — members, friends, and local sailing enthusiasts alike. It’s a great chance to celebrate the season, share some laughs, and raise a glass together. 🍻
🌩️ Stormy Skies, Bright Minds 🌟
Last Wednesday’s Family Quiz Night was nothing short of legendary! 🎉👏 Despite the wild storm raging outside, the clubhouse was buzzing with laughter, cheers, and the unmistakable sound of brains working overtime.
It was wonderful to see so many new faces filling the room, proving that a little rain (okay, a LOT of rain) can’t dampen community spirit. Fuelled by hotdogs, chips, and a good dose of competitive energy 🌭🍟, teams battled it out for glory, vouchers, and of course… enough candy to keep dentists in business for weeks. 🕹️🎁
🎖️ And the winners are...
A huge congratulations to our winning teams who walked away victorious — and a massive thank you to everyone who joined in and made the night so much fun. Your enthusiasm lit up the stormy night brighter than any lightning bolt! ⚡💡💜
We can’t wait to welcome you all back for the next family quiz night — here’s hoping the weather is calmer, but the competition just as fierce. Until then, keep those brains sharp and your umbrellas handy! ☔🧠
GoodSAM: An App That Saves Lives
When seconds matter, the GoodSAM app connects people in need with trained responders nearby. Integrated with emergency services worldwide, it alerts off-duty medics and CPR-trained volunteers—often reaching patients before an ambulance arrives.
Through the app, you can also see the locations of nearby defibrillators and other GoodSAM responders, making lifesaving equipment and support easier to access in a crisis.
Recently, Sabrina was called out via GoodSAM to assist with a cardiac arrest. An unconscious person was reported, and she was ready to respond. Fortunately, by the time she arrived, she was stood down as others were already on scene—showing just how quickly help can arrive thanks to this community-powered network.
GoodSAM has already saved thousands of lives, especially in cardiac arrest cases where immediate CPR and defibrillation can double survival chances. With its live video feature, emergency dispatchers can also see the scene and provide better guidance.
Anyone with CPR or first aid training can register as a responder, and healthcare professionals are especially encouraged to join. With GoodSAM, technology and community spirit come together to make every second count.
More first aid courses will be announced at the club.

Cholmondeley Charity Yacht Race
100 Year Celebration
It’s that time of year again when we are on the hunt for a number of boats to help us support Cholmondeley Children’s Centre for their annual charity race day. From cruisers to keelboats, right down to trailer yachts, if you have a boat and are happy to take some keen crew out on the 17th October, please get in touch!
This year is special because we are helping celebrate Cholmondeley's 100 years of support to our communities.
Cholmondeley will have corporate teams from as small as 4 and as large as 9 people so please let us know how many you can comfortably (and maximum) take.
You are welcome and encouraged to have one other experienced crew member on board with you. We will have a skipper's briefing at 12.30 pm. At 1 pm, everyone will make their way to the boats, and at 2 pm, the race starts. Afterwards, there will be a social function and auctions. All are welcome.
