What's Happening Around NPCL

It's all goooooooo!

There’s plenty of action down at the club this month, both on the water and behind the scenes!

River has been busy preparing to run Moanamana courses, connecting students and community groups with the challenge of helping to restore the mana of Moana. Through Moanamana, ākonga become citizen scientists — learning how climate change, overfishing and pollution affect our marine environment, and using NZL Blue Belt tools to monitor what’s happening right here in our local waters. It’s all about understanding our ocean, protecting it, and taking action for the future.

Meanwhile, Emily has been just as flat out with Runa Days, which invite local schools and community groups to experience a day with the club. These sessions blend how to harness the wind, sailing, and water safety, helping tamariki and whānau build confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging around our harbour.

Emily’s also keeping things humming with Learn to Sail Levels 1 & 2, Junior Sailing, and Adult Learn to Sail. With a fantastic team of coaches to draw from, there’s always plenty of experience and enthusiasm to go around.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who’ve stepped up to help, whether it’s coaching, rigging boats, or lending a hand around the club. These programmes simply wouldn’t happen without you.

And don’t forget — this Saturday is our “Give it a Go” Day!
We’re inviting everyone from the community to come down, check out the club, and see what we’re all about. If you can spare some time, we’d love a few extra pairs of hands to: Show visitors around the club, help with flotation tests, chat about your class of boat and why you love sailing it.  It’s a great way to share your passion and welcome new people into our sailing whānau.

There’s even more exciting stuff happening soon (we can’t spill all the details yet 👀), but keep an eye out, we’ll have film crews around over the next two weekends, capturing all the action on and off the water!

Urban Road Sprint Series – 420 Fleet!  We’re excited to introduce our fleet of 12 420s to the Urban Road Sprint Series! These boats will be used for fleet racing, giving more kids the chance to get out on the water with a parent sailing alongside. It’s a fantastic way to build skills, confidence, and family fun on the harbour.  https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/386209

Haulout Yard

Winter Rates $$$

Over the summer break we slow the haulout yard down so that the public ramp can be utiilized by them.

We will be offering under-21-day member rates from December 19th to February 2nd.  The boat must be pulled out by the 19th of December and will not go back into the water until the 2nd of February unless arranged with management.  https://form.jotform.com/NavalPoint/haulout-request-form

Spotlight: Shortening a Course

Ever wondered what happens when the Race Committee decides to shorten the course? Here’s a quick rundown of how it works under the latest updates:

Q: When might the course be shortened?
A: If the wind drops, time’s running out, or conditions change, the Race Committee can shorten the course under Rule 32 to make sure everyone still gets a fair race and a proper finish.

Q: How will I know the course has been shortened?
A: That depends on the race type:

At a rounding mark: You’ll see Code Flag “S” displayed and hear two sound signals.

For Keelers and Trailer Yachts in Out of Harbour races: The Race Committee may announce it by VHF instead of using the flag or sound signal.

If “S” is flown over the Second Substitute: That means you should round the next mark and head straight for the finish line.

🌬️ When the Races Don’t Go Ahead

Sometimes, even when we’re all eager to get out on the water, race day plans need to change. Recent cancellations have reminded us that it’s not just about the wind being too strong, there’s a lot more that goes into keeping sailors and volunteers safe.

Race Officers carefully consider a range of factors before making the call:

Tide and sea state – Is the current too strong, or are waves too high?

Gusts and wind patterns – Sudden gusts can make sailing dangerous for all classes of boats.

Wind temperature – Cold, wet conditions can quickly become a safety risk.

Volunteer support – Safety on the water relies on our amazing volunteers. If conditions are too challenging, it’s not fair to ask them to jump in and assist in risky situations.

Cancelling a race is never an easy decision. Our Race Officers balance the thrill of sailing with the safety and wellbeing of everyone on and off the water. The decision to cancel is made with everyone in mind — skippers, crew, and volunteers alike.  One individual does not make this decision, but by three experienced volunteers.

While it can be disappointing to miss a race, these precautions ensure that when the conditions are right, we can all get out there and enjoy the harbour safely.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers and members for understanding and supporting the decisions that keep NPCL a safe and welcoming club for everyone.

Racing Information

Registration

All sailors are required to register for either a series or a one-off event. This ensures you are officially entered in a race and have agreed to the terms and rules of racing.
👉 Registering does not mean you must race—it simply makes you eligible to do so.

Sign On and Off System

We now have a simplified sign on / sign off process. This can be done:

  • On your phone
  • On a tablet/laptop/desktop
  • Or in the club lobby (on the club’s tablet)

This must be completed as you go out on the water, not the night before.
It is essential for the club’s Health & Safety monitoring, ensuring we know who has gone out and who has returned safely.

✅ You must register and sign on and off the water.

Saturday Racing

All Saturday racing, including Outer Harbour Races, is part of the Saturday Spring Series.
