β΅Prize Giving and AGMThanks for a Great SeasonThank you to everyone who came along to our Prize Giving and AGM. It was good to see the clubhouse full and to close out the season the way it deserves. Congratulations to all our trophy and award winners. Every one of them earned it, but the night was really about the season as a whole. Behind every skipper on that start line is a crew who turned up week after week, in whatever the harbour threw at us, and got the boat around the course. Prize giving is one of the few times we get everyone in the same room to say thanks for that. If you sailed with us this season, in any boat, in any role, this was your night too. The AGM followed, with members hearing how the club is tracking and voting on the year ahead. The annual financial statements and the meeting minutes are available on the club website for members to review. If you couldn't make it on the night, that's the place to catch up on where things stand. Thanks again to the volunteers who ran races, drove ribs, worked the galley and set up the room. π¦ Our Newest Member Hauled Out UninvitedWe had a visitor at the club recently, a leopard seal, who made himself thoroughly at home π and showed no particular interest in our membership process. Plenty of you got photos πΈ, and those have since been passed on to Whale Watch NZ, who are always keen for sightings. Every photo helps build the picture of what's moving through the harbour, so thank you to everyone who sent theirs in π Things then took a turn. π A PhD student got in touch and came down to the club, cheerfully, we should note, to pickup the seal scat Sabrina collected. Which is a scientific term for seal poo π© Apparently you can learn a remarkable amount from it: diet, health, what's actually out there in the water. Real science, genuinely useful. π A formal complaintClub Manager Sabrina wishes it noted that "collecting seal scat" did not appear anywhere in the job description at the time of hiring, and would like this raised with the Board at the earliest opportunity βοΈ The Board's response is awaited with interest πΏ In the meantime, if our friend returns, please give him plenty of space π« Seals are wild animals and protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act. Keep your distance, keep dogs well away, and never get between a seal and the water. And take a photo. Justβ¦ leave the rest to the professionals 𧀠|

Become a Sailing Coach β YNZ Start... Coaching Course at Naval Point, 29β30 AugustYachting New Zealand is bringing its entry-level Start... Coaching Course to Naval Point Club Lyttelton over the weekend of Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, running 8.00am Saturday through to 4.30pm Sunday. This is the qualification that gets you started as a sailing coach. Over the two days you'll gain the skills to deliver the Learn to Sail Level 1 and Level 2 programmes, manage safety on and off the water, and step into a coaching role at the club. The course is facilitated by Lee Sharland. It's open to anyone aged 14 and over, which makes it a great fit for three groups in particular:
The course fee is $155, and enrolment is through the Yachting NZ portal. There are online pre-course requirements to complete before the weekend, so don't leave registration to the last minute. A note for parents: please register your young coach using their own email address. It lets them access the pre-course work, revisit the material after they've qualified, and keeps our club records tidy. Places are capped at 14 and 7 are already taken. The course also needs a minimum of 10 people to go ahead, so if you're thinking about it, now's the time to sign up. Register: Yachting NZ event page More coaches means more sailing for everyone. π½οΈ Old Salts Luncheon β Tuesday 11 AugustThe next Old Salts Luncheon is on Tuesday 11 August π . Same good company, same yarns β, and this year some particularly good news on the cost. π Thanks to a grant from the Christchurch City Council Strengthening Communities Fund, the cost of the lunch is covered for the entire year. Every luncheon, no charge. We're grateful to the Council for backing something that means a great deal to a lot of our members π If you'd like to koha the club, you're very welcome to do so at the bar π» β but there's no expectation, and nobody will be watching. Know Someone Worth Nominating?Yachting Excellence Awards Now OpenNominations are open for the 2026 Barfoot & Thompson Yachting Excellence Awards, held this year at Royal Akarana Yacht Club on Friday 6 November. It's easy to look at the headline category: the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy for Sailor of the Year, previously won by the likes of Sir Peter Blake, Barbara Kendall, Sir Russell Coutts and Emirates Team New Zealand, and assume the awards aren't really about clubs like ours. They are. A good number of the categories exist specifically to recognise the people who make club sailing work:
Most of us can think of someone at Naval Point who fits one of those. The volunteer who's run races for years without fuss. The coach quietly turning out good young sailors. The member who makes newcomers feel welcome on their first day at the club. That work usually goes unremarked β a nomination is a straightforward way to change that. Nominating takes only a few minutes and it's open to anyone. Nominate: yachtingnz.org.nz β Excellence Awards If you're not sure whether someone qualifies, put them forward anyway. Worst case, nothing comes of it. Best case, someone who's given a lot to this club gets a well-deserved evening in Auckland. |

Harbour Safety RemindersThe team at Black Cat Cruises has asked us to share a few important reminders with harbour users. Black Cat ferries are required to follow a specific route. If they need to divert from that route, they must record the reason. When ferries are forced to slow unexpectedly, it can affect passenger safety, as many people onboard are standing and sudden changes in speed can knock them off their feet. Please keep to the right when entering and leaving the harbour, and when departing the harbour, give the ferry plenty of room. While sailing vessels may technically have right of way, ferry crews will often hear yacht engines running and assume those vessels are under power. Black Cat monitors VHF Channel 12, and harbour users are encouraged to use this channel when passing through the moles. Black Cat has also asked that race marks not be placed on the ferry route. Our Race Officers have already added the route to Buoy Zone and are taking this into account when setting courses. A little awareness goes a long way in helping keep Whakaraupo safe for everyone. πβ΅ |
