NAVAL POINT CLUB - eNewsletter

Weenesday 28th August  2024

It feels like only a mere few weeks ago we were here talking about the season end, with only 2 weekends until opening day I hope those winter boat maintenance jobs have been completed or are near then end, Either that or you've had a great winter break (Yes I write this newsletter from Interlarken, Switzerland )

If you haven't finished or even started that list of boat chores, don't forget about the comprehensive winter maintenance guide published by the team at Oborns, pop into the shop and they will help you out.

The team on the ground at NPCL are working tirelessly to get everything ready for the new season, the floater is now back in the water and over the weekend 9 volunteers participated in a rescue boat skipper training course. This will provide us with more signed off skippers to help spread the load between the team. However with yet again a proud number of regattas in our calendar for the coming season, we are always looking for support on and off the water, so please reach out even if you only have 1 day to spare.

Its important to note the changes for the upcoming season, a new club Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions have been published so please familiarize yourself with this.

However we are also implementing new software for our sign in & out system.

SIGNING ON & OFF and Event Registration for the new seasonStarting with Opening Day on September 14, signing-on and signing-off and event registration will be manged by our new software package, SailEvent, which replaces VisTab and the online registration forms. Sailors can use their phones to register for events, sign on and off, and get courses and the latest race information. Signing on and off in the clubhouse will continue with the SailEvent Kiosk on the club tablet.SailEvent's Sailor self-service makes it easy for competitors to enter events, receive race information and sign on and off the water – all via mobile phone. Sailors only need to create one account to access events run by any club using SailEvent.SailEvent incorporates automatic alerts to remind sailors to tally on and off.The use of SailEvent is mandatory for the coming season. Any boats that come to a race start line without having registered for SailEvent, or having not signed on, will be denied a result at the end of their race. The following link explains the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYPc7xM1_x8More information will be provided at the September 7 Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions briefing.

Message from the Commodore

I am looking forward to an amazing season, the club is looking great thanks to work of volunteers. Not only does it look great but the feel has completely changed and is so welcoming and the improvements haven’t stopped over winter. The floater has undergone major maintenance and all those involved need a huge thank you. I spent a few hours one day cleaning off mussels and after washing my clothes 5 times I have admitted defeat and thrown them away. The dedicated small team of volunteers have been working on it for months!!!

Youth sailing is the future of the club. We are so excited to have the Elliott’s back on the water this season with an online booking system that has already had great interest. A team from Charteris  Bay have signed up to train prior to heading to Auckland for the kiwi cup. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to having a team ourselves in the future.

Amanda’s work with learn to sail now has many optimist sailors advancing to open fleet where we will have them training on Saturdays mornings and for the first time in a long time we will see them racing on Saturday afternoons.

It looks like we will have teams racing with multiple schools involved training out of naval point this year. We have our name down to host the nationals in 2027 so have some time to get Christchurch schools involved and competitive.

It’s Haulout time before the racing season starts, we have had a record number through the yard and need to give a shout out to Phil and the others that help him in the yard for making this happen.

Sabrina has so much in store for us this year. Her powerhouse of energy has ideas coming to fruition and I’m always excited to see what she is next planning to improve the club and bring more members in.

May this be the year that decisions on the future of the hub and building are made. We are waiting on a feasibility study to be completed (was due end of May) before we decide on next steps. In the mean time we will continue to work and invest with what we have as we need a working club to keep membership happy and new members joining up.

Have a great season, come and talk to the board if you want to raise any concerns, have any ideas or just want to talk about anything
